Close Circuit Monitoring
Barnswallow currently enjoys close circuit monitoring cameras in (7) of our
outdoor facilities. These high tech systems allow us to observe the birds
(resident, fostering orphans or in rehabilitation) without disturbing their natural
behavior. These cameras operate 24 hours a day and have been a critical and a
wondrous observation tool,
Barnswallow has received (7) additional cameras but currently does not have the
resources to install them. Want to help?
Trenching for electric cables, hard-wiring of designated outdoor cages and the
installation of (7) additional camera systems.
Estimated cost: $10,000
Build a Home for “ZZ”
"ZZ” is a new addition to our educational team of non-releasable raptors. "ZZ" is a
Western Burrowing Owl from Cody, Wyoming. Once caught in a barbed wire fence, he now sports a partially amputated wing.
Plans to create a 5' x 5' habitat, which will provide a natural area, include natural
ground burrows, natural water source, a variety of perches and full spectrum
light when necessary. The caging will be predator proof capable of moving
outdoors and back indoors depending on the weather.
Estimated cost: $3,000
Astro-Turf
Barnswallow uses "long-leaf" Astro Turf to line clinic cage floors and outside
platforms. This material is long lasting, easy to clean, cuts to size, and is good for
the bird's feet. We could use several rolls.
(1) Large roll plus shipping cost: $600/roll
Adopt a Hawk—"Phoenix" and "Fuego"
These two juvenile Red-tail hawks were admitted in 2007. Both had been burned
by invisible methane gas at separate waste dump sites. All of their outer body, wing and tail feathers were singed off, actually burned to the feather shafts,
rendering them unable to stay warm, dry or fly. Although in their under-feathers,
they are otherwise healthy and enjoying good room service in a large heated
indoor space. It is estimated that it will take 2 years for them to completely molt
in the feathers required for proper flight and then release. The plan is to rehab
them wild and release them when ready.
Estimated cost of food (a combination of quail, rats and mice) required to feed
these rascals for (1) year = $1,000 each per year
Food for a Day
Barnswallow spends approximately $80.00/day to provide food to our resident
educational birds and birds being rehabilitated.
Any help is appreciated!
Adopt an Intern
Barnswallow relies solely on volunteers and unpaid interns, normally one day a
week. We are not looking for new people, yet, for the current staff is well trained.
Most are in college but return on weekends to help. With summer break
approaching, it would be great to be able to entice our best helpers to choose
Barnswallow as a summer job.
Any help is appreciated!
